Will Johnny Depp pull off Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’?
Update: So, does he pull it off? See my thoughts here.
Johnny Depp ruined the classic “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” with an effeminate, prissy Willy Wonka (though I suppose that’s really Burton’s fault – I think Depp is enormously talented). Now he’s set to place the Mad Hatter in Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland”, due out in 2010.
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland has a special place in my heart (and my library; I’ve started a small collection) so Burton better not mess it up! I do think Burton will do a sufficiently weird/creepy job and am pretty excited to see the film.
Did you know…
Lewis Carroll wrote the Mad Hatter’s riddle (“Why is a raven like a writing desk?”) without an answer in mind?
The phrase “mad as a hatter” comes from hat makers inhaling mercury fumes given off during the process of curing felt for hats. The exposure caused neurological damage, including vision problems, twitching and confused speech. Another name for mercury poisoning? – Mad Hatter’s disease.
Here’s a photo of Alice (Mia Wasikowaska) on the set:
(love that coat!)
The movie will also star Anne Hathaway as the White Queen and Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen (good choice).
The goal is to try to make it an engaging movie where you get some of the psychology and kind of bring a freshness but also keep the classic nature of ‘Alice.’
