Countdown to exams: 9 days!
Countdown to degree: ~1 month!

Yikes!

Though I need to kick studying into high gear, I managed a trip to Minneapolis to celebrate the 2011 Kerlan Award, given “in recognition of singular attainments in the creation of children’s literature and in appreciation for generous donation of unique resources to the Kerlan Collection for the study of children’s literature.” This year’s recipient is author Jane Kurtz, who gave a wonderful talk about her childhood in Ethiopia and the power of literature.

Jane has written many books, including many featuring Ethiopian children. She is very involved with Ethiopia Reads, an organization that opens libraries for children in Ethiopia, publishes books in local languages, and trains teachers and librarians to help create a culture of reading in Ethiopia. There are many ways to support the organization, so check it out.

What an excellent way to get involved! Thanks for the heads-up; I’ll look for her books.
